Hellgate

Recorded by John Yao and His 17-piece Instrument, “Hellgate” is a dark, groovy shuffle that hits hard and features classic big band stylings such as tight section writing and extended ensemble passages.  Kicking off with big chords and trumpet/tenor sax solo fills, the chart uses a simple, understated melody which is accompanied by distinctive chords and a catchy bass line.  After the solos, a heated exchange between unison horns and drums leads to full on climax and gentle ease down to conclude the piece.  From big and raucous collective solos to calm, light and colorful textures, “Hellgate” has several unexpected moments but is always swinging and grooving.
